#A-TO-Z CHALLENGE - LETTER "G" - GUFFAW

GUFFAW

noun 1. a loud and boisterous laugh. synonyms: laugh heartily, laugh loudly, roar with laughter; roar, bellow, cackle.

verb 1. Laugh in a loud and boisterous way. "Both men guffawed at the remark." synonyms: see above.

I was originally going to write about George Burns and Gracie Allen and their career in radio, but time and tide waits for no man, nor woman. Those of you who know me, know that I pretty much write by the seat of my pants, with little pre-planning. This has caught up to me this week, and so, for today, I have taken the ballsy method of presenting you with a definition of the hoped-for result of some of the comedians I have been writing about. I have a week of neurologists, pulmonary specialists and my psychiatrist visit, along with my duties as minion to #teamDamyanti and have been also over-whelmed with trying to edit "Music of the Spheres".

Not to worry, H, I, J, K and all the rest will be well-represented. Enjoy!

BOOK RELEASE ANNOUNCEMENT AND RAFFLE-COPTER!!!

Title: Golden Dawn
Author: Aldrea Alien
Genre: Paranormal

Release date: April 18th, 2014

From now until April 18th, I will be show-casing Aldrea Alien's newest release, Golden Dawn. This will include an raffle-copter (be sure and enter!) and well. . . I'll let her take it from here!

 Family and blood.

After 1100 years, these simple words mean everything to Herald. His life has been ruled by keeping his siblings safe, keeping them from becoming prey whilst feeding on the weaker. His failures have been many and measured by those he has lost. People like his twin brother.

There has always been an enemy to push back or defeat.

Just who the enemy is comes into question when Herald meets the dangerous, angelic creature he is to guard. Wondering where his true loyalties lie is a dangerous thought. No matter whether he chooses family over the heart, it will mean death.

Only the right choice will ensure the life taken is not his.

Viola,

I just love the word 'guffaw'. It makes me laugh just saying it.

I also love the sentence, "Since discovering a love of writing at the age of twelve, she hasn't found an ounce of peace from the characters plaguing her mind." I understand that completely. Actually there are times when I hate writing but, at the very same time, I love it more than anything else. I know those characters (and words in general) will keep on hounding me and there's no escaping!

Thank you so much for visiting my blog and leaving such a kind comment on my last story. I really did appreciate it!

I have to confess I've not heard of many of the comedians you've mentioned. Clearly my comedy education is sorely lacking. I'll have to check them out.

Oh guffaw...is there a much better sound than that?!

I do a lot of blog posting by the seat of my pants, too. Nice to meet you via the #a2zchallenge! Now following, if I'm not already doing so. :)

Well, at least you actually got something up.

I do like Guffaw, the word itself is funny, but I see other people have said the same thing.

I don't thing "guffaw" is technically onomatopoeia, but it's damn close.

I love the word "guffaw" -- for some reason though, my mind resonates it with "utterly amazed". It cheers me up saying the word out loud to myself :D

Sue!

Thank you so much for stopping by! I have to admit I was at the end of my tether here. I do so NOT want each post to just be a comedian's or humorist's or author's c. v. and then, some blurb. It was also a life-saver!

Andrea is a peach and a keeper! When I read those words, I guffawed! It's personal takes on life such as hers that keep me sane and somewhat on track with the own circus in my head!

You are so very welcome, regarding the comment on your blog, Sue. Your blog and your post astonished me and frankly, blew me away. You voiced something so precious and beautiful, yet at the time so heart-breaking, that only the saving grace of endless love for your one-day old son and the kind, kind woman who helped you with his burial clothes comes anywhere close to healing that. Frankly, it's easy to lose sight of that and you made it so personal; it could not have been easy for you to write. Sometimes, in this darkness, knowing that such compassion and selfless giving and kindness exist get us through the absolute worst of times. Bless you and your family, and that wonderful, wonderful woman who gave so much to you. Bless you for the wonderful, strong woman you are; you have the heart of a lioness. All my love, Mary

Thanks so much for stopping by! It's okay if you haven't heard of many of them. Some of them are obscure and some are particular to American audiences. If any of my little snapshots gives you a yen to hear more, that's great! I assure you, I like to blog about all sorts of things; this is a reach for me and I appreciate the visit! Mary xoxo

Andrea!

For some reason, I always think of some old geezers sitting around a cracker barrel, whittling, and telling stories about the one that got away! "Guffaw" resonates with "guff" as in my mother's "Mary, you're full of guff," when I tried to pull some shenanigans, and "aw" or maybe "awe". I'm unclear yet, it could go either way. I love to play with words. I have my folks to thank for that! Thanks for stopping by! Mary

We're rooting for you and it's about having fun, as well as making new contacts! I'm so glad you visited and I'm glad I stopped by to see your blog; it is wonderful! Mary xoxox

C.D.!

If "guffaw" as you state, isn't an onomatopoeia, but comes close, here is another little thing that you might think about, although, the onomatopoeia thing occurred to me, as well. "Guffaw" is a combination of "guff" and "awe" or "aw", I haven't really looked at the etiology, beyond the fact that it is an early 18th century Scots word. My parents were from the auld sod and I heard much about being full of "guff" from my Ma.

Also, being Scots, I heard a lot of other stuff that is probably not fit for mixed company, but let me just say, that it was a source of pride when I said my first "f*ck" at age 12, and my Daddy was proud. So it goes with the Scots, Scots-Irish and I believe northern English; we're not all that civilized. But, guffaw is a lovely word! Thanks for the visit! Mary

@Maria!

I thank you so much for stopping by! I love your postcards and stamps! I just wanted to say, I think you are on to something! It is utterly amazing, in the way of "awe" and I didn't discover that the word's origins date back to Scotland in the early 18th century.

Another thing I find amazing is how certain words resonate and when we say them aloud, they do make us feel better! "Chimera" is such a word for me. It just sounds so very pretty! Thanks again, Mary. xoxo
